2007 Gardens Tour

Our Gardens Tour this year is set for the weekend of 10-11 March.

Currently we have four beautiful gardens signed up with one more to come in the Casa Marina area.

First of all our very own Ron & Holly Zemlicka have kindly volunteered their interesting garden on Newton Street. They have some rare trees, including the largest Lignum Vitae tree in Key West, pretty gingers and bromeliads and some fascinating historic stone architectural pieces edging their back deck.

We have three very different large gardens on Washington Street.

Margaret & Ken Domanski's garden originally designed by Patrick Tierney, includes a collection of 16 different types of Palm; a stone path which winds throughout the garden taking you past beautiful waterfalls and fish pond; colorful plantings of jatropha; caladiums; neoregelias and plumbago.

The focal point of the Mermelstein's garden is a dramatic water feature which flows into their fabulous swimming pool.  They also boast a private breakfast nook sunken into their back yard; a couple of resplendent Bismarkia and an excellent banana collection. You cannot help but notice their corner property as the Mermelstein's have planted an abundance of colorful natives and palms outside their fences for everyone to enjoy.  Just inside the back gate is a pretty private spot for their orchid collection.

Virginia Stone’s and Jeff Cardonas’ garden is a treasure because of all the rare and unusual trees—a Gingerbread palm, a poisonous “toothpick palm”, 3 Sabal palms and a Calabash tree, currently loaded with fruit.  The man who built the home was a friend of David Fairchild and the two of them hunted rare plants—some of which were planted in this garden.

The Gardens Tour will finish at our very own gardens at West Martello where the orchid society is hosting an orchid fair the same weekend....a delightful ending to this year's tour.
